The Syrjänen lab uncovers how cells communicate by exploring the structure and function of macromolecular protein complexes. We combine cryo-EM, biochemistry and biophysical methods in our approach. We seek to understand the relationships between the three dimensional structure of a protein assembly, their interactions with the local environment, and their function. We are also interested in how these molecular mechanisms lead to effects at the tissue and organism level. In addition, we are excited about the potential of harnessing structural and functional discoveries for the future development of therapeutics.
